no longer available Pear Columnar (Pyrus communis) CONCORDE

Concorde was developed at the East Malling Research Station in the UK, in the 1970s. The heritage and flavor of Concorde makes it one of the best multi-purpose and dessert quality pears available today.

Crossing: Conference x Doyenne du Comice
Vigour: weak, compact, growth habit upright
Blossom: self-fertile, but in practice it performs much better if there is a compatible pollinator nearby
Fruits: large, 220 g, oblong bottle-shaped, fruit colour yellow-cream, but it may sometimes be flushed from exposure to sunlight
Pulp: semi-melting, crisp, fine-celled and juicy
Taste: sweet and subtle, reminiscent of sugar melon
Harvest season: mid to late September, keeps until the end of October, in CA storage also until the end of March. The pear retains its flavor in storage, but quickly turns yellow, which consumers often interpret as overripe.
Yield: high, regular. Tends to over-crop and it is very important to thin the fruitlets in June.
Disease resistance: highly resistant to scab (Venturia pyrina) and powdery mildew (Podosphaera leucotricha), low susceptibility to fire blight (Erwinia amylovora). Suitable for organic or no-spray culture.
