Hardy Olive tree (Olea europaea) ARBEQUINA

Traditional hardy Spanish olive tree variety. The name Arbequina comes from the Spanish village of Arbeca, where this variety originated in the 17th century. Arbequina is currently one of the most important varieties in world olive production, valued for its aromatic dark brown fruits with high oil content and excellent olive oil with a fruity flavor. Although it prefers alkaline soils, it also thrives in a slightly acidic soil environment. Prefers a sunny spot.

Vigour: weak to medium strong. In adulthood it can exhibit either tree or shrub character, depending on the pruning method. Mature trees reach a height of about 2 m. The leaves are evergreen, narrow, silvery. The tree responds well to pruning, is easily shaped and cared for. Adapts to different climate and soil types. Resistant to frost and drought. The variety is used with great success in dense planting systems.
Blossom: Arbequina is self-fertile, but crops will be heavier with another variety nearby
Fruits: small, oval, weight 1,5 g, dark brown. Ripe olives are highly aromatic, with an oil content of 20-22%. The oil is of high quality with a buttery, fruity, aromatic and very mild taste without bitterness.
Harvest season: hot summer climates produce the most abundant olive crops, which ripen late October to early November
Yield: very productive variety with early start of production from the 2nd year after planting
Resistance to diseases and pests: in our conditions, there is no known sensitivity to fungal diseases or pests
Frost resistance: down to -18°C
Cultivation in the first few years: we usually cultivate young olive trees in pots or containers. Old trees are far more resilient than young ones. If the root freezes, the tree dies. A plus of 10 degrees is ideal for wintering in a cold house. This requires light. With too little light, the olive tree loses its leaves. Water little, do not fertilize, do not let the bales dry out, ventilate the cold house sufficiently. Strong plants that are at least 2 to 3 years old are planted outdoors. Sunny location on the southern wall is an ideal place for planting. It is protected from north winds and increases the chances of olives for wintering. Younger plants tolerate frost down to -10°, older ones down to -18°C.
