A unique sweet cherry x sour cherry interspecific hybrid. The fruits are as big as the cherries with a unique taste between sweet cherry and sour cherry without excessive acidity. Variety is resistant to Monilia, leaf spot and frost hardy.
Interspecific crosses are a valuable possibility to enlarge the gene pool in cherry breeding and to insert new characteristics in cherry. The main goals in sweet and sour cherry breeding are fruit quality, resistance to biotic and abiotic stress, stable fruit set and resistance to Monilia and cherry leaf spot.
Crossing: sour cherry Ostheimer Weichsel x cherry Valery Chkalov, breeders Lilija Ivanovna Taranenko, A.I. Sychov
Vigour: moderate like the sour cherry, branches like sweet cherry, canopy moderately dense, round. On the rootstock Gisela 5, the cherry is just a small compact tree, reaches a maximum height of 2.5 - 3 m, does not take up much space and is suitable for small gardens.
Blossom: cross-pollinate, need cross pollination with a different variety of sweet cherry or sweet-sour cherry that blooms at the same time
Fruits: very large, weight 9 g and more, juicy, dark red, firm, shiny. In rainy weather, fruits neither crack nor rot. Fruits are good storable and transportable.
Pulp: juicy, flesh and juice dark red
Taste: harmonious, very refreshing, sweet like sweet cherry with a mild sour cherry taste
Harvest season: mid-June. Ripe fruits can hang on the tree for a long time without any loss of quality. With gradual ripening they lose acidity and the pulp becomes noticeably dark red color.
Special notes: very suitable for small gardens. The variety is valuable for its fruit quality, good health and frost resistance. The advantage is resistance to brown rot of stone fruit (Monilinia laxa) and leaf spot caused by the fungus Blumeriella jaapii. Suitable for organic or no-spray culture.
