Large-fruited interspecific hybrid between European and Asian pears. Combines the positive properties and characteristics of both parents - long shelf life, firmness, juiciness and a unique fruit taste.
Origin: Depew, Oklahoma USA, breeder Lois Turnbull
Vigour: strong, upright, columnar, slender, the total height of the tree is 3 - 3.5 m. The tree is disease resistant and tolerates heat, drought and cold.
Blossom: self-fertile variety, an excellent pollen source for other compatible pears. Has a long flowering period, which means that spring frosts are successfully avoided.
Fruit: very large, weight 450 g and more, round shape, green-yellow peel
Pulp: creamy white, firm, crunchy, juicy, reminiscent of the taste and consistency of the apple. The pulp is often almost seedless, a factor that could match the size of the fruit (all of the energy goes into the fruit and very little goes into seed formation).
Harvest season: mid-September, cold storage for 2 to 3 months possible. When the fruits are harvested in the mid-season, they are as crispy and juicy as any apple. When harvested at the end of the season, they are very sweet and soft like pears.
Disease resistance: resistance to scab (Venturia pyrina) and fire blight (Erwinia amylovora), tolerance to heat, drought and cold. Suitable for organic or no-spray culture.
