Unique interspecific Sweet Cherry x Sour Cherry hybrid. The magnificent fruits are as big as the largest cherries. The taste is fine without excessive acidity. Interspecific crosses are a valuable possibility to enlarge the gene pool in cherry breeding and to insert new characteristics in cherry. The main goals in sweet and sour cherry breeding are fruit quality, resistance to biotic and abiotic stress, stable fruit set and resistance to brown rot and cherry leaf spot.
Crossing: elite form D 38-31 (sour cherry Nord Star x sweet cherry Valery Chkalov) x free pollination, breeder Lilia Ivanovna Taranenko
Vigour: medium strong, semi upright. On the rootstock Gisela 5, the cherry is just a small compact tree, reaches a maximum height of 2.5 - 3 m, does not take up much space and is suitable for small gardens.
Blossom: partially self-fertile variety, brings better harvests if the sour cherries or sweet cherries are available as pollinators
Fruit: very large, weight 10 - 12 g, sometimes up to 15 g, dark red, firm, shiny. In rainy weather, fruits neither crack nor rot. Fruits are good storable and transportable.
Pulp: juicy, pulp and juice dark red, freestone. Medium-sized stone.
Taste: harmonious, predominantly sweet to sour, very refreshing, sweet like sweet cherry with a mild sour cherry taste
Harvest season: near Bratislava mid-June. Ripe fruits can stay on the tree for a long time without damage, with gradual ripening they lose acidity and the flesh turns a distinct dark red color.
Special notes: very suitable for small gardens. The variety is valuable for its fruit quality, good health, and high frost resistance. The advantage is the resistance to brown rot of stone fruit (Monilinia laxa) and cherry leaf spot caused by the fungus Blumeriella jaapii.
