Service Tree (Sorbus domestica) SOSSENHEIMER RIESEN

Large-fruited, high-yielding German variety of an almost forgotten fruit plant. Used as a fruit tree for over 1000 years. In areas with mild winters, the trees can grow up to 150 years old.

Vigour: deciduous, partly multi-stemmed tree with a pyramidal canopy, final height 8 - 10 m
Blossom: May, white-pink, cymes, self-fertile
Fruit: pear-shaped, 3 - 4 cm in diameter, tawny reddish, doughy when fully ripe, rich in vitamins
Taste: sweet and sour, exceptionally aromatic
Harvest season: September - October, can be processed after exposure to frost or longer storage
Yield: early onset, high and regular
Usage: fresh consumption, jelly, jams, compotes, bakery, liquor, wine, remedies
Soil: thrives best on loose, moderately moist, well-drained, calcareous, sandy-clay soil
